From out of his father's shadow comes Todd Brunson, carving his own name into the poker
annals. Over the past seven years he's cashed in more than 70 major tournaments, reached 52
final tables, and won 16 of them – including the 2005 WSOP $2,500 Omaha hi-lo - for a total of
over $3 million in winnings. Todd slaughtered the competition at the Poker Superstars
Invitational two years in a row, sailing through season three to win. Not surprisingly, he's
also one of the founders and developers of today's popular H.O.R.S.E. – but that's another story
for another issue of UTG.
Before heading off to Putters for a round of darts with the usual suspects, we caught up with
Todd at his home in Las Vegas. He shared with us his insight and approach to playing and
succeeding in no-limit hold 'em tournaments. Be sure to check out his segment on the DVD for all
his advice that will have you reaching more final tables more often.
"It's pretty important to play kind of straightforward and don't get too far out of line,
don't try and get too fancy. That's where I think a lot of people get in trouble. They try and
pull off bluffs against people and they wind up going broke with sub-par hands."
"You need to have several games, several game-plans, several styles of play, so depending on
who you match up against you can use your different styles to counter their styles."
"Mental stability is everything in a tournament. If you lose a hand and get upset and throw
the rest of your chips away that one hand is going to destroy you." - Todd Brunson
